- TURNING CHANGE TO ADVANTAGE IN THE NEW ANTI-MONEY LAUNDERING REGIME
Before founding MHA in 1993, Michael Hyland spent 20 years as a senior executive within the Midland Bank Group in various roles covering security, fraud and internal audit. He was a member of the UK Joint Money Laundering Steering Grooup (JMLSG) from its inception until 1997. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Certified Accountants and a Fellow of the Institute of Internal Auditors. Michael is a director of MHA, and primarily focuses on awareness-raising and training, providing bespoke services and training materials. He works closely in the design and delivery of focused, cost-effective training initiatives with such clients as the British Bankers’ Association, the Law Society of England and Wales, the regulators in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man and financial institutions of various types. He has been co-producer of the BBA/JMLSG money laundering training products from 1990 to date.
Jim Lound has over 20 years' experience in the financial services environment, having worked for two clearing banks before joining Experian in 1996. His background is in risk management coupled with extensive involvement in business process re-engineering. His current role is as Product Director with responsibility for the Experian Trust Services products, including identity authentication and age vertification. Jim has more recently been focusing on anti-money laundering and personal identity initiatives in the private and public sectors.
David Blackmore joined Sabanci Bank in February 2004, having previously fulfilled a similar role at Arab Bank, London from 1999. He previously undertook internal audit, compliance and MLRO roles with Alpha Credit Bank, London (Greece's largest private sector bank) and Italian International Bank (since absorbed into the Monte dei Paschi di Siena Group). During his 35 year banking career David has spent 18 years with the HSBC Group, mainly in the international corporate banking, sovereigh risk and financial institutions areas. He left in 1986 for a "career break" of six years in the political and parliamentary lobbying arena in London, Brussels and Strasbourg, and rejoined the city in 1992. Since 2003 he has served on the BBA's Money Laundering Advisory Panel (MLAP). He is member of both the Compliance Institute and the Securities and Investments Institute's Compliance Forum, and was an officer of the Banking and Financial Services Group of the Institute of Internal Auditors UK from 1994 to 2004.
Richard Smolicz joined MHA as a Senior Executive in November 2002, and is now Consulting Services Director. His previous role was as European MLRO for Credit Suisse First Boston, in the bank’s Legal and Compliance Department. In this role he was part of a major group initiative in relation to money laundering. He has sat on the BBA JMLSG and Advisory Panels. He is also one of the founding committee members of the Institute of Money Laundering Prevention Officers (IMLPO).
Sue Thornhill is a Director of MHA and is generally recognised as the UK’s anti-money laundering guru; she needs little introduction other than that. Sue has spent 18 years specialising in money laundering and compliance, having worked with the British Bankers’ Association since 1980. She was the principal author of the UK Money Laundering Guidance Notes for the financial sector from 1990 to 2003, and continues her role as consultant to the BBA and adviser to the JMLSG. In this role she works closely with HM Treasury and the FSA, and runs the national help desk, being the central point of reference for the UK’s financial sector on money laundering regulation and compliance.
Will Newby is Britannia's Compliance Policy and Development Manager. Will has performed a number of roles at Britannia, including two spells as Group Training and Competence Manager. He has an extensive training and development background, and a part of his current role is to meet Britannia's core knowledge training requirement. That requirement includes designing and delivering anti-money laundering training programmes for all staff.

Steve Hancock worked in law enforcement for seven years, before joining the financial services industry in 1988. Since then he has worked for Prudential and Lloyds TSB in numerous roles that have included sales, sales management, training, compliance and security. He has worked in the field of money laundering prevention since the introduction of the UK legislation in April 1994. Steve is currently Head of Group Money Laundering Prevention for Prudential, which is a financial services provider acrosss 35 business areas in 22 countries throughout Europe, South Africa, Asia and the USA. He has responsibility for group policy and procedures in the prevention of money laundering crime. Steve is the founder and chairman of IMLPO, a professional member of the US Assocation of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS) and a member of the International Compliance Association (ICA). He has also recently successfully completed the ICA Diploma in Anti-Money Laundering, obtaining a pass with distinction. He sits on a number of industry working groups at national and international level, including the Financial Services Skills Council working group dealing with anti-money laundering and associated financial crime prevention. He has also worked as an adviser on various AML issues and policy to the Egyptian Government, the Czech Police and the European Development Bank in Sarajevo.
